POSCO INTERNATIONAL contributes to carbon reduction

in Indonesia through mangrove forestation

- Tackling climate changes by preventing natural disasters in the coastal regions and reducing carbon footprint

- Participating in public health, medicine, education, and other projects benefiting the local communities

On June 27th, POSCO INTERNATIONAL planted mangrove saplings as a part of mangrove forestation in Indonesia, setting examples for coexistence with the local communities and environmental preservation.

Mangrove forests grow on sandbanks and estuaries, preventing damage in the coastal areas in cases of abnormal climate events such as floods and typhoons and, most of all, contributing to greenhouse gas reduction with the effective absorption of carbon dioxide.

According to the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), mangrove forests reduce 100 tons of carbon per hectare annually, making steady mangrove forestation significantly helpful for handling climate changes in the local communities.

POSCO INTERNATIONAL's mangrove forestation project in Indonesia started in 2019 as reforestation of mangrove forests damaged by coastal developments. The COVID-19 outbreak afterwards put a strain on the forestation, but the project resumed in 2021.

The recent forestation activity took place at Taman Wisata Alam Mangrove, a mangrove forest park near POSCO INTERNATIONAL's local palm plantation corporate headquarters, with 38 executives and employees including the corporate head present.

"The sea bordering the coast of Jakarta is severely polluted," said one of the POSCO INTERNATIONAL personnel who directly participated in the forestation activity. "We participate directly in mangrove forestation in hopes that the trees will turn the ocean water clean again."

POSCO INTERNATIONAL plans to take part in mangrove forestation every year in a gradually larger scale to contribute to the local communities and brand itself further as an eco-friendly corporation.

Meanwhile, POSCO INTERNATIONAL acquired international eco-friendly certifications including Indonesian Sustainable Palm Oil (ISPO) and Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO) for sustainable operations after commencing its palm plantation enterprise in 2011 and is also participating in biodiversity preservations through endorsing academic researches on the endangered Javan gibbons of Indonesia and many others.
