Partnership helps women in need across the country get free mammograms
CINCINNATI, Oct. 13 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- -- Procter & Gamble (P&G) has partnered with the National Breast Cancer Foundation (NBCF) to help educate women about how early breast cancer detection can help save lives. This October, in recognition of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, P&G has made a donation of $250,000 to the NBCF to provide free mammograms for women who could not otherwise afford them. To celebrate this donation, several popular P&G brands are "going pink," including Dawn(R), Folgers(R), Pringles(R) and Olay(R). The pink versions of these and other products will be available on shelves through October to remind shoppers of the importance of getting routine mammograms and regular breast cancer screenings.
When breast cancer is detected early, the 5-year survival rate is 96 percent. Further, more than two million breast cancer survivors are alive today in the United States. P&G is committed to helping ensure that the number of breast cancer survivors continues to increase.
"We are very excited to partner with P&G and believe this generous donation will go far in helping women who are in need obtain necessary breast cancer screenings before it's too late," says NBCF President and Founder, Janelle Hail. "The pink ribbon products demonstrate P&G's strong commitment to helping women be proactive about early detection and maintaining their breast health."
To further support early detection, NBCF, with support from P&G, have developed a tool that enables women to personalize an early detection plan. Consumers can customize the tool by visiting www.mypinkplan.com, and for the first time, consumers can opt in to receive virtual reminders to schedule a breast cancer screening via e-mail, SMS text and instant messenger. For every personalized plan created, P&G will make an additional $1 donation to the NBCF.
"P&G is proud to support the NBCF's efforts to raise awareness about the importance of early breast cancer detection," says P&G Marketing Director, Janet Fletcher. "We hope that our support will help women in need obtain necessary breast cancer screenings and that our pink ribbon products will serve as a reminder for women to get screened regularly for breast cancer."
P&G products that are "going pink" for October include Bounce(R), Bounty(R), Cascade(R), Charmin(R), Crest(R), Dawn(R), Downy(R), Duracell(R), Febreze(R), Folgers(R), Olay(R), Pantene(R), Pringles(R), Puffs(R) and Tide(R).
Early Detection is Critical
Breast cancer becomes more difficult to treat the more advanced it is at first diagnosis. Women at all ages can take control of their health by making an early breast cancer detection plan. This includes performing breast self-exams and scheduling clinical breast exams every three years, starting at age 20. Women should also start having a baseline mammogram and annual clinical breast exams by age 40, and even earlier for women who are at higher risk (e.g., women who have breast cancer in their immediate family). As women age past 40, mammograms should be received more frequently - up to once a year. The NBCF and P&G encourage women at all ages to record personal exams, mammograms and doctors' appointments on a calendar or in a detailed file and maintain a healthy lifestyle.
