GAZPROM NEFT Gazprom Neft and Sirius University of Science and Technology are to open a joint master's programme in mathematical modelling and digital technologies in oil and gas engineering, starting in autumn 2022 - following an agreement signed by Vadim Yakovlev, Deputy Chairman of the Management Board, Gazprom Neft, Ilya Dementiev, Rector of the Gazprom Neft Corporate University, and Roman Ivanov, Rector of Sirius University of Science and Technology.
The master's programme at Sirius will be partnered by Gazprom Neft's Science and Technology Centre (STC), which has been successfully developing an internal corporation education programme in innovation management for several years now. The company will offer students real-life business projects throughout the course, and may subsequently accept masters students on internships within its various subsidiaries or business units.
Teachers on the course will include leading Russian academics from the Marchuk Institute of Higher Mathematics of the Russian Academy of Sciences, experts from Sirius University of Science and Technology, and teachers and specialists from Gazprom Neft's Professional Development Centre and its Science and Technology Centre's Technological Intelligence Academy.
The objective of this free educational programme is to train world-class researchers (Principal Investigators (PIs)), capable of managing technological projects directed at solving business problems. Key course elements will include application programming, discrete mathematics, optimisation theory and numerical methods, machine learning, and more. Masters students will learn how to develop 'digital twins' of technological facilities and oil fields, how to model the work of automated oilfields, how to develop advanced enhanced oil recovery (EOR) methodologies, and how to deploy new technologies in production.
The capabilities of Sirius University's high-performance computer cluster will be used in solving practical problems as part of the mathematical modelling element of this master's programme.
Sirius University of Science and Technology was founded by the Talent and Success Educational Foundation in 2019. The university is focussed on developing areas of priority importance to the country's Scientific and Technological Development Strategy: genetics and life sciences; cognitive sciences; information technologies and artificial intelligence; mathematics; and urban studies. In-person and remote-learning modules, schools and conferences are held in each of these subjects. More than 1,400 students studied at Sirius University of Science and Technology in 2020/21, with this number expected to increase to 4,000 by the end of 2021. The first master's and PhD programmes will start in September 2021. The university forms part of the Russia's first ever specially designated 'Federal Territory' - the Sirius Federal Territory - within which general, professional, higher and supplementary education programmes, as well as state-of-the-art laboratories, technology-transfer tools and implementation infrastructure, have all been integrated. The prototype products and technologies developed by the university's researchers are expected to shape Russian industry, in the medium term.
The Gazprom Neft Science and Technology's Professional Development Centre is a high-tech educational platform for the company's corporate training system, created to promote experience sharing, and for building and sharing knowledge. About 225 company employees are now teaching at the Professional Development Centre, of whom five hold advanced degrees in the sciences and 31 are PhDs.
The Technological Intelligence Academy was established within the Science and Technology Centre in 2019 as an environment for developing skills and competencies in managing technological and innovation projects. Its core objective is to develop a pool of employees for effective innovation management within Gazprom Neft. Participants on the programme cover more than 50 educational case studies, study methodological invention, and develop professional and leadership skills.
The League of Universities is an integrated system allowing Gazprom Neft to engage with higher education institutions, with a focus on developing partnerships and cross-functional collaboration. The League of Universities also includes a digital platform allowing the formation of cross-functional teams involving Gazprom Neft employees and representatives from universities on jointly pursuing projects of any size or scale.
