Rosseti FGC UES completes upgrading key power output circuit element of Iriklin TPP

02/12/2021

Full renovation has been made on the 500 kV breakers fleet at the Iriklin Thermal Power Plant 500 kV switchyard, which is under the responsibility of Rosseti FGC UES (Rosseti Group). Upgrade has also been made on three backbone transmission lines that deliver electricity to consumers in the Orenburg region. The total cost of work amounted to about 400 mn rubles. Higher reliability has been provided for the power output circuit of the Southern Urals biggest power plant.

Circuit breakers are key elements of switching equipment that reduce the risk of system faults in the event of a short circuit. Highly dependable gas-insulated units are installed at the Iriklin TPP 500 kV switchyard. The new breakers differ from the oil- and air-insulated versions for their more compact size and better fire safety. The equipment is made in Russia.

Upgrades have also been made on the transmission lines that are transiting energy from the Iriklin TPP to Tselinnaya, Orskaya, Rysaevo, and Novotroitskaya 220 kV substations. A total of 73 concrete supports with longer service life (up to 50 years) have been mounted. The new structures have high mechanical strength and greater resilience to climatic stresses, including temperature fluctuations between -65 and +50 °C and wind speeds of 25-30 m/sec or higher.

The 2.46 GW Iriklin TPP is the key generating asset of the Urals power system. Aerial 500/220/110 kV transmission lines are branched from the power station, which deliver electricity to the Orenburg and Chelyabinsk regions and the Republic of Bashkortostan. The 500 kV lines are connected to the substations that feed some big industrial enterprises such as Orenburg Gas Processing Plant, Magnitogorsk Iron and Steel Works, etc. Electricity is transited via the Iriklin TPP - Zhitikara 500 kV interconnector to the Republic of Kazakhstan.
