Rosseti FGC UES deploys machine vision technology at Saratov region's biggest power center

05/26/2021

The project is implemented for the first time in the Russian grids. The system is installed at Kurdyum 500 kV substation (with 1242 MVA capacity) that is vital for the power supply of an area with 2.4 mn people and the power output of the Saratov Dam and the Balakovo NPP.

Rosseti FGC UES has installed a highly automated monitoring system here, including an unmanned aerial vehicle. It is also equipped with thermal imaging, audial and visual monitoring modules.

The system is running 24/7 and allows for remote monitoring of the status of all key elements of the substation's equipment as well as incoming power transmission lines.

The drone's camera and the thermal imaging system help find defective elements such as heated contact connections or damaged conductors. All this can be done without climbing up any supports, which saves a lot of time and excludes the risk of injuries.

The project is aimed at improving the power center's reliability owing to timely detection and elimination of faults. Upon the pilot run of the Kurdyum 500 kV substation, a decision will be made on scaling up this experience.
