Indications are strong that German Sportswear Company, PUMA is going to sue the Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN) over contract violations.

It will be recalled that in 2019, the Engineer Ibrahim Shehu-Gusau led AFN signed a sponsorship deal worth $2.76m with the company.

Part of the contract was that PUMA would supply kits to all age categories to Nigeria's Athletics team till 2023 at no cost.

However, following the controversies that trailed the deal and the lingering crisis between the Federal Ministry of Sports and the Gusau led board, Team Nigeria Athletics to the Tokyo Olympics games didn't don the PUMA kits.

Consequently, on Wednesday, the company's director Manuel Edlheimb wrote officially to announce the termination of the four-year contract citing breaches.

In his reaction, a member of the Gusau-led board of AFN, Sunday Adeleye yesterday said PUMA will definitely sue not only the Athletics federation but the Federal Ministry of Sports who gave the approval for the signing of the contract.

He also said the Sports Ministry had been warned about the consequences of Team Athletics not making use of the kits supplied by PUMA at the Olympics.

But the same yesterday, Secretary-General of the Tonobock Okwa's led AFN, Prince Adeniyi Adisa Beyioku issued a statement saying the AFN does not know anything about the contract outside what has been written in the media.

It will be recalled that Daily Trust had reported on July 16 that Team Nigeria Athletics wasn't going to don the already supplied PUMA kits and that might compel PUMA to trigger a clause in the contract for refund of N1.1b.
