We're all used to modern commercial buildings using glass as an integral part of their structure. But for it to look at its best, and fulfil the architect's vision, the glass needs to be kept clean. This represents a major challenge in many such buildings. Once they're over a certain height, it's no longer possible to use solutions such as elevating work platforms ('cherry-pickers') to clean their outsides. For FM companies in particular, this can be a problem if they have a portfolio of buildings above this height. That's where rope access cleaning comes into effect. In this blog, we're going to take a closer look at IRATA, the international standard system for working at height - and how we deliver cleaning services using this standard.

The strengths of the IRATA system
Industrial rope access has been developed by IRATA International (Industrial Rope Access Trade Association) for over 25 years. Its success is based on thorough training and strict work guidelines. It was initially developed to meet a specific need to solve maintenance problems in the offshore oil and gas industry. But rope access has become an integral part of the work-at-height sector around the world. IRATA International's rope access system is a two-rope, fail-to-safe method of working at height. Ropes and associated equipment are used to gain access to and from the work position, and workers are then supported there.

The advantage of using rope access methods mainly lies in the safety and speed with which workers can get to or from difficult locations in order to carry out their work. The primary objective when using rope access methods is to carry out the work efficiently, with minimal accidents, incidents or dangerous occurrences. In order to ensure a safe system of work is maintained at all times, careful planning and documented risk assessments are undertaken for each operation. This also limits damage to property or harm to the environment.

IRATA training for the best in rope access cleaning
IRATA has taken safe working at height around the world and seen general work procedures improved because of its influence. Its extensive use by major companies, administrations and governments who approve of its high standards has also raised the profile of IRATA work. IRATA has a continuously evolving regime of work procedures that members are required to follow. Like any other method for working at height, the application of rope access should be regarded as a complete system.

As well as member companies of the association, IRATA has a roster of training companies. These are monitored for compliance under IRATA's Training, Assessment and Certification Scheme (TACS). Furthermore, the IRATA International Code of Practice (ICoP) gives recommendations and guidance on the use of rope access methods in order to provide a safe system of work.

Cleaning the outside of buildings is a manageable challenge
Here at REACT, we have IRATA-trained teams who can take on rope access cleaning wherever it may be needed. For FM companies in buildings above a certain height, we're on hand to provide thorough, safe and reliable cleaning services for the outside of their buildings. For each job, we'll carefully plan and manage the task, using competent personnel and suitable equipment to provide an excellent finish to the exterior of the building.

In fact, our rope access cleaning service is one which highlights our company values. We rely on our staff, and with our IRATA-trained cleaning operatives, we have an excellent record of safe working at height. We're always fully equipped and fully insured, and our rope access work is no exception. Rope access cleaning has positive environmental benefits, given it needs no invasive access equipment. And it allows us to provide excellent service to FM companies needing exterior cleans on taller buildings.
