Achieving net zero

As countries around the world urgently look for ways to create a net zero economy, an innovative project in Hull could be set to put the UK in a leading position.

This innovative collaboration between the private, public and education sectors is based on an innovative, 'Living Lab' approach to making Hull the first carbon neutral region in the UK.

As well as attracting the support of global businesses like Reckitt, the project is supported by the CBI and Make UK. The goal is to develop an innovative economic model that helps Hull and similar cities to Build Back Better and support a net zero future.

This aim is especially ambitious, as the Humber - the UK's 'Energy Estuary' - is currently Britain's biggest CO2-emitting region, due to the longstanding presence of the fossil fuel industries that currently power the country.

However, the region is also home to the world's largest offshore wind farms, is at the forefront of establishing a new hydrogen economy, and has secured significant investment from global businesses looking to develop 'green' technologies.

As the birthplace of Reckitt, we were proud to open our new global R&D centre in Hull in 2019, and to champion the 'Living Lab' project. When we re-branded last year we wanted to celebrate our continuing investment in the region through something tangible and sustainable.

That's why we're actively involved in driving the 'Building a Better Hull' project, which we believe will create a prosperous future for the city and become a blueprint for estuarial economies around the world.
