Red Eléctrica de España and Endesa will jointly invest a total of €10.6 million in the construction of a new 220 kilovolt (kV) electricity substation in Jerez de la Frontera. The infrastructure project, which also includes the corresponding transmission and distribution lines that will connect it to the existing Dos Hermanas-Puerto Real line, will help strengthen the supply in the rural zones of the municipal area of Jerez and the Cádiz mountain range.

The project consists of two different parts. On the one hand, the construction works for the 220kV substation and its corresponding 3.64 km long double-circuit incoming and outgoing feeder lines carried out by Red Eléctrica for a total of €5.5 million. Additionally, on the other hand, those works corresponding to the 220 kV to 66 kV step-down transformer substation and the 20 km long distribution lines to be undertaken by Endesa for a figure of €5.1 million.

Work on the Mirabal transmission substation has already begun and is expected to be completed in September 2020. Subsequently, work will be undertaken on the incoming and outgoing feeder lines and, depending on the speed of the administrative permitting procedures, it is expected to be completed in June 2021. Afterwards, work will begin on the distribution network, which will then allow for the definitive commissioning of the facility in mid-2023.

The new infrastructure is being developed in coordination with the City Council of Jerez and the Regional Government of Andalusia. It will consist of a conventional technology 220/66 kV transformer (air cooled) with a power rating of 125 megavolt-amperes (MVA).

Its strategic location will allow the quality of the electricity supply to be improved in most rural areas of the region, as well as contribute to boosting their economic development. This infrastructure will also make it viable to connect renewable generation facilities (for which there are already grid access requests from electricity agents awaiting to be processed) in order for them to evacuate their energy into the grid via the transmission substation.

This new substation will also allow the quality of the electricity supply to be strengthened in the towns located in the mountains of Cádiz (Sierra de Cádiz), thanks to the construction of a new medium-voltage distribution line that is 20 km long that will connect the new substation to the towns located in the mountain range.
