REN joins international initiative for the creation of environmentally sustainable energy networks 27.01.2022
REN has joined the RGI - Renewables Grid Initiative, an entity that aims to collaborate with non-Governmental Organisations (ONG) and Energy Transmission System Operators (TSO) across Europe, and promotes the development of transparent and environmentally sustainable networks in line with the Paris Agreement.

"Joining RGI gives us the opportunity to share our own experiences and apprenticeshipswith other European TSOs and NGOs, building a common knowledge on biodiversity protection whilst building and maintaining electricity networks and jointly find new solutions to avoid, mitigate, compensate and communicate the impacts that grid infrastructure may have", explains REN's COO João Conceição.

"REN is at the centre of decarbonisation in Portugal, enabling the expansion of almost 13 GW of renewable energy in the last 15 years, while maintaining security of supply as a priority in a context of coal phase out. We will continuously develop a safe and reliable energy backbone, doubling down on electrification by 2024 and leading decarbonisation through hydrogen enablement", says João Conceição.

REN's membership to RGI is aligned with the company's sustainability strategy and is another step towards the integration of renewable energy sources, demonstrating its commitment towards the accomplishment of carbon neutrality objectives by 2040, the promotion of a sustainable development and the fight against climate change, while strengthening the company's financial soundness and operational performance of excellence.

The Renewables Grid Initiative is a unique platform that promotes the cooperation between TSOs and NGOs from across Europe.

Since 2014 it awards with the "Good Practices of the Year" Prize initiatives that demonstrate exceptional practice within the areas of Communication, Technological Innovation and Environmental Protection. In 2021 it distinguished REN's project "Environmental Impact Studies: Virtual Visit" in the "Communication & Engagement" category.
