REN joins the Portuguese national campaign for recognition of the climate as a Common Heritage of Humanity 26.04.2022

REN, together with other Portuguese companies and organisations, joined the Portuguese national campaign for the recognition of the climate as a Common Heritage of Humanity. The goal of this initiative, which is part of the Basic Law on Climate, is to get participating companies and organisations to promote and support the actions of this campaign and to participate in the recruitment of new members. REN's membership in the initiative is in line with the company's sustainability strategy and underlines the Group's commitment to sustainable development and environmental protection.

This campaign, which seeks to include Stable Climate as a Common Heritage of Humanity, places Portugal in the spotlight as a global forerunner in an initiative of this scope and as an initiator of the discussion on the climate's legal status. The goal is for this to no longer be managed only as a "common concern", as it is considered, for example, in the Paris Agreement.

The initiative was publicly announced at an event held on Earth Day, which took place on 22 April. At the ceremony, which took place at the rectory of the University of Porto, the coordination of the Mission Group for the recognition of the climate as a Common Heritage of Humanity was presented. The group consisted of the Common House of Humanity, the University of Porto, the Centre for Legal and Economic Research of the University of Porto, the Vodafone Portugal Foundation, Portuguese-French scientific organisation EurOcean, and the Business as Nature association.

Along with REN, the Mission Group also includes BMW Portugal, Portway, Faber Castell, Águas do Algarve, Águas do Tejo Atlântico, Associação Comercial do Porto, ICNF, Conselho Económico e Social, Conselho Nacional do Ambiente e Desenvolvimento Sustentável, environmental organisation ZERO, Telles de Abreu Advogados, LIDERA (voluntary system for the evaluation of sustainable construction), the Portuguese Plastics Industry Association, and the National Federation of Youth Associations.
