As part of this transaction, which marks a first for Renault in charging infrastructures outside France, Mobilize will acquire a "significant" stake in Free To X, it announced in a press release.
The size of this stake and the amount of the corresponding investment were not made public. Completion of the transaction remains subject to regulatory approvals.
The development of recharging infrastructures is a key factor in boosting sales of electric vehicles, which stalled last year due to persistently high selling prices and concerns about range for long-distance journeys.
A fast-charging station can recharge 80% of a battery in 20 minutes, the length of a recommended coffee break after two hours' driving.
The Free To X network comprises 110 high-power stations located mainly on freeways, said Mobilize in its press release. The two partners now intend to focus on charging points beyond freeways.
Mobilize currently has around 50 stations in operation, or in the process of becoming operational, in France, all off the motorway network but close to on-ramps.
"By collaborating with Free To X, we are not only improving the charging infrastructure in Italy, but also realizing our strategic ambition to deploy a high-performance fast-charging network across Europe," said Mobilize CEO Gianluca De Ficchy, quoted in the release.
In addition to France and Italy, the Renault subsidiary also has infrastructure projects in Belgium and Spain.
