PHOENIX (AP) _ Republic Services Inc. (RSG) on Thursday reported second-quarter profit of $331.1 million.

On a per-share basis, the Phoenix-based company said it had profit of $1.03. Earnings, adjusted for non-recurring costs, came to $1.09 per share.

The results surpassed Wall Street expectations. The average estimate of nine analysts surveyed by Zacks Investment Research was for earnings of 94 cents per share.

The waste management company posted revenue of $2.81 billion in the period, also topping Street forecasts. Six analysts surveyed by Zacks expected $2.72 billion.

Republic Services expects full-year earnings in the range of $4 to $4.05 per share.

Republic Services shares have increased 20% since the beginning of the year, while the S&P's 500 index has increased 18%. In the final minutes of trading on Thursday, shares hit $115.48, a rise of 33% in the last 12 months.
