Rio Tinto has announced that it has completed the transition to renewable diesel for all its heavy equipment at its Kennecott copper mine (Utah, USA), thereby reducing its carbon footprint.

In concrete terms, the fleet of 97 trucks and heavy machinery is now powered by renewable diesel, which is expected to reduce Scope 1 emissions by 450,000 tonnes.

Rio Tinto points out that the Kennecott mine has one of the lowest carbon footprints of any copper producer in the USA, thanks to initiatives such as the closure of a coal-fired power plant and the installation of a solar farm.
Its emissions have been reduced by more than 80% compared with 2018.

As a reminder, Rio Tinto is aiming for a 50% reduction in its Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 2030 and a goal of net zero by 2050.
