Shweta Sharma is a Senior Software Engineer who's working hard to build a robust and vibrant economy on Roblox. Here, she discusses what she loves most about her role and the impact she's making for our global community.

Describe your role here at Roblox.

I work on the Economy team, dealing specifically with Payments and Fraud. The Economy team handles any transactions (real money and virtual currency) that occur on Roblox. We're also in charge of fraud prevention, trading, subscriptions, developer monetization (through Premium Payouts and our Developer Exchange program), and ads.

What is one of the most interesting aspects of working on your team at Roblox?

Having an economy is a crucial part of building the metaverse. On the Economy team, we're working on some really fun ways to create value for our creator community, which in turn increases engagement on the platform. With incentives like Premium Payouts, developers are able to create better experiences for users while also building a sustainable business for themselves! It's been really awesome to see developers who don't monetize their experiences earn money based on their user engagement.

As we continue expanding globally, it's also been interesting to see the different payment laws and habits of different countries. We're constantly working to create solutions to integrate local payment providers in a seamless way.

How is your experience on the Economy team at Roblox different from other roles you've had?

There are a few things that stand out from other roles that I've had in the past. One of them is the long-term vision for the company. Since I started, the company has grown a lot-and as an engineer, so have I. The amount of learning I've done in my 2.5 years at Roblox is 10x compared to other roles. This is primarily because we're in such an innovative space and we're pioneering a lot of the technologies that make up the metaverse. Not only that, but the company's vision has continued to grow as we add more innovative features and components to the platform. It's always great to be at a company that is not in maintenance mode but is continuously innovating new solutions.

The second is the level of transparency from the leaders. This allows employees to feel a greater sense of ownership in the company. The weekly town halls and AMAs (ask me anything) with the CEO are great ways to feel connected and ask questions about decisions made by our leaders.

What's one thing you love about the culture at Roblox?

The culture at Roblox is very friendly and helpful. During my first few weeks, people from across different teams were always willing to help me when I asked questions. This was really great to see because it shows how much everyone cares about the company as a whole. On a similar note, everyone is keen on getting to know everyone-even if their work functionality doesn't overlap. When we weren't working from home, a bunch of us from across different teams would have lunch together and play board games. And while working from home, it's always great to see such positive comments and reactions from everyone in the #townhall channel on Slack too!
