At a time when so many families around the world are confined to home and schools are closed, the need to find ways to keep children entertained and curious has never been greater.

As a leading promoter of STEM (Science Technology Engineering and Mathematics) activities designed to inspire the future generation of pioneers, we recognise the need for materials and have come up with a variety of fun - but challenging - activities for you.

And while a Rolls-Royce STEM Ambassador might not be able to visit schools right now, we can bring the materials to you at home.

As Paul Broadhead, Head of Community Investment and Education Outreach, says: 'We know these are challenging times for families in lockdown and that children can easily become bored. All of these STEM activities provide fun and learning for a wide variety of ages. And they aren't all for budding engineers, there are opportunities here to create stories and role play in them, so there is something for everyone.'

Just choose from our list below:

Tech We Can

Rolls-Royce is an active supporter of Tech We Can, 12 online lessons available to parents and carers looking for material to teach children at home

The lesson packs, aimed primarily at 10-13-year-olds, have been designed to be simple to use and require no specialist knowledge to deliver. They're broken down into segments, making it easy for parents to choose activities most likely to interest their children.

They aren't all technology-based, including Communication & Marketing; Education; Entertainment & Arts; The Environment; Finance; Health & Inclusion; Manufacturing & Engineering; Retail; Safety & Security; and Travel & Tourism, but they do educate children about different types of careers available to them, with Rolls-Royce role models and STEM Ambassadors making appearances.

And they are designed to encourage girls to consider a career in technology - with 61 per cent of children completing the lessons able to identify a female technology pioneer, compared to just 16 per cent before.

Parents aren't left behind - they get a special 10 minute tutorial video on how best to deliver the materials.

ACCEL

Ever wanted to run a whole airport? Well now you can thanks to our ACCEL team that have created a range of things to do for primary school pupils. ACCEL is our all-electric aircraft project, and they've come up with printable signs to turn your home into your very own airport. Signs for departures, arrivals, check-in, passports, luggage labels, aircraft cabin controls and some lovely views from a passenger window. It's fun, but it is all mapped to the UK National Curriculum. And that is just one of a host of activities to try out.

Rolls-Royce and the Scout Association

Think of the Scouts and you think of outdoor activities, so we've teamed up with them to meet the challenge of staying in. Appropriately named The Great Indoors, the website now has almost 300 activities to keep children and young people busy and curious. The range is huge, from activities to promote physical and emotional well-being to staying safe online. Rolls-Royce has contributed some fun STEM-themed activities to the mix which have had some high-profile pick-up, including astronaut Tim Peake, who completed our 'Storm in a Teacup' activity with his children in a video he posted on Facebook which is here:https://www.facebook.com/606249199414870/posts/3086922114680887/?vh=e&d=n

At Home with Aerospace Bristol

If you've seen Concorde on TV or on social media then you will have been amazed at its power and grace - and now At Home with Aerospace Bristol allows you to make your own version at home. With thrust created by a balloon and with a length of string providing 'fly by wire' capability, it may not have quite the performance of the original, but it provides all the satisfaction of seeing your very own creation sail majestically across your living room. It's just one of a number of fun videos and activities to keep children entertained, brought to you from a Bristol team famous for creating the original Olympus engines the powered Concorde to the skies.

Royal Academy of Engineering

In collaboration with the Royal Academy of Engineering and other partners, we have created videos and insights as part of the This is Engineering campaign on how you can #BeTheDifference whether you are interested in the environment, helping people, technology, health & body, design, sport, space, fashion, film & TV, flight, cars, beauty, 'big things' and more.
