By Rolls-Royce, the global power systems company, has won a $1bn order from Singapore Airlines to supply Trent 700 engines to power 15 Airbus A330 aircraft, along with TotalCare® services support.
The Trent 700 is the most fuel efficient, cleanest and quietest engine on the A330. Since it entered service in 1995, Rolls-Royce has continued to improve its performance by incorporating advanced technology from the Trent 900 and Trent 1000. These enhancements have delivered a one per cent reduction in fuel consumption, which saves 800 tonnes of CO2 per aircraft, per year.
Singapore Airlines already operates 19 Trent 700-powered A330s, the first of which was delivered in 2009.

The Trent 700, the only engine designed specifically for the A330, has won more than 75 per cent of orders in the last three years. More than 1,300 Trent 700 engines are now in service or on order.

- As a result of this strategy, Rolls-Royce has a broad customer base comprising more than 500 airlines, 4,000 corporate and utility aircraft and helicopter operators, 160 armed forces, more than 2,500 marine customers, including 70 navies, and energy customers in nearly 120 countries, with an installed base of 54,000 gas turbines.
- Annual underlying revenues were £10.8 billion in 2010, of which more than half came from the provision of services. The firm and announced order book stood at £59.2 billion at 31 December 2010, providing visibility of future levels of activity.
- Rolls-Royce employs over 39,000 skilled people in offices, manufacturing and service facilities in over 50 countries. Over 11,000 of these employees are engineers.
- In 2010, Rolls-Royce invested £923 million on research and development, two thirds of which had the objective of further improving the environmental performance of its products, in particular reducing emissions.
- Rolls-Royce supports a global network of 28 University Technology Centres, which connect the company’s engineers with the forefront of scientific research.
- The Group has a strong commitment to apprentice and graduate recruitment and to further developing employee skills.
- The Trent 700 has accumulated more than 16 million hours in service with 58 operators. More than 380 Trent 700-powered Airbus A330s are in service.
- Singapore Airlines has five Trent family members either in service or on order – The Trent 500, Trent 700, Trent 800, Trent 900 and Trent XWB.
- Rolls-Royce has had operations in Singapore for over 50 years; it is the hub of the Group’s activities in Asia and home to the global headquarters of the marine business.
- Construction of the Rolls-Royce Seletar campus is planned for completion in 2012, which will incorporate a Trent aero engine test and assembly facility, a wide chord fan blade (WCFB) manufacturing facility, a Regional Training Centre (RTC) and an Advanced Technology Centre (ATC).
- Total investment in Seletar will exceed S$700m and it will create approximately 500 new jobs when fully operational, bringing the number of people employed by the Group in Singapore to around 2,000.
- Rolls-Royce has established a number of successful joint venture partnerships in Singapore, primarily with SIA Engineering Company (SIAEC). These include Singapore Aero Engine Services Limited (SAESL) and International Engine Components Overhaul (IECO), both of which provide services to major regional and global carriers.
