The DJSI, the market's benchmark index to measure the performance of the largest companies by market capitalization in economic, environmental and social matters, adjusted BBVA's position in the 2020 ranking from the third to the second most sustainable bank in the world. This index was published on November 14th, and today, February 8th, reported these changes that improve BBVA's position in the ranking.

Following the publication of the Dow Jones Sustainability Index, S&P Global publishes an annual report in which the companies with the best performance in sustainability in their industry are classified as gold, silver or bronze class. BBVA was recognized in the silver class, meaning that it is within the one and five percent of companies in its industry with the best performance for economic, environmental and social matters.

'We congratulate BBVA for achieving a place in The Sustainability Yearbook 2021. With over 7,000 companies assessed, an inclusion in the yearbook is a true statement of corporate sustainability excellence,' said Manjit Jus, Global Director of S&P Global's ESG Research.

'We are very proud of receiving the silver award in this prestigious indicator. In addition, moving up one position to the second most sustainable bank in the world, according to the DJSI, reaffirms our commitment to sustainability, which is one of our strategic priorities,' said Ricardo Laiseca, Director of BBVA's Global Sustainability Office.

More than 7,000 companies of 61different sectors were assessed in this new edition of the S&P Global yearbook.

A record number of companies participated in the assessment for the 2020 edition of The Sustainability Yearbook, which indicates that sustainability is becoming increasingly important on corporate agendas.

In 2020, BBVA published its General Policy on Sustainability and its first report on the risks and opportunities of climate change according to the Task Force on Climate-related Financial Disclosures (TCFD) standard. The report reflects the bank's progress in incorporating climate risks into the management of all of its businesses and its commitment to accompany its clients in the transition to a more sustainable future. Furthermore, in 2020, the bank updated its Corporate Social Responsibility Policy, strengthening the commitment to have a positive impact on society, human rights, community investment and BBVA's aspiration to be an agent of social change.
