Paris, February 29, 2016 - Saft, the world's leading designer and manufacturer of advanced batteries for industry, is at Middle East Electricity (MEE) to launch its new SPX cutting-edge nickel-based battery. Specifically developed for mission critical engine starting applications in the demanding conditions experienced in the Middle East, SPX is also ideally suited for starting backup generators, where it ensures high reliability, long cranking times at both high and low temperatures, and a calendar life of over 20 years.

The SPX design, which is certified to IEC 60623 'X' extra-high power, delivers the most amperes per Ah capacity of any comparable battery - ranging from 316 A for 30 seconds for the 25 Ah capacity SPX 316 to 3330 A for 30 seconds for the 315 Ah capacity SPX 3330. Moreover, thanks to its reduced footprint, the SPX enables smaller installation and lower environmental impact.

SPX guarantees a secure and reliable emergency power supply
Standby power plant must be instantly available in case of emergencies. This is particularly important when the application is mission critical, such as for process plant where a loss of production can have important economic impact or a hospital where lives can be at risk. These applications place a significant demand on generator starting batteries, which is why nickel-based chemistry is the technology of choice thanks to its long and predictable operating life, with no risk of the 'sudden death' that can be experienced by lead-acid batteries.

SPX batteries have been developed for reliability in all conditions. They can operate normally over a range of temperatures from -20°C to + 50°C and withstand extremes of -50°C to +70°C for short periods.

The ideal choice for starting engines
The SPX battery range delivers maximum starting capacity throughout its life. Even when the battery is not fully charged, the starting power is almost 100 percent.

SPX is ideal for extended starting sequences where the engine might need cranking for up to 240 seconds. It also provides twice the starting power for the same Ah capacity compared to a lead-acid battery.

No corrosion or corrosive fumes
The corrosion which takes place in a lead-acid battery can lead to sudden and total failure. In SPX batteries, there is no risk of corrosion. Cell containers, separators and vents are made of polypropylene. All load-bearing parts such as pole bolts and the electrode structure are made of steel. The electrolyte preserves the steel components and only acts as a medium for the transfer of ions. There is no risk of internal corrosion, nor can corrosive gases be formed.

SPX offers a long life, up to 10 times that of lead-acid batteries
The SPX design offers a calendar life of over 20 years of calendar life - depending on the specific application. This is around 10 times the life expectancy of an equivalent lead-acid starter battery. In addition, SPX batteries require very little maintenance.

For an optimum total cost of ownership
Saft has developed the SPX to ensure an optimum total cost of ownership (TCO). While its initial cost is greater than a lead-acid battery, the SPX outperforms it when the risk of failure is unacceptable, when a long installed life is demanded and when there is a risk of unreliable battery maintenance.
