Dec 01, 20215 min read

Companies want talented individuals who have in-demand design skills to maneuver ever-shifting landscapes successfully. Design is an intentional, iterative, human-centric approach to innovation and problem solving. By prioritizing the needs and expectations of people while developing products, services, and experiences, design offers organizations the tools to navigate complexity and deliver best-in-class solutions.

Research shows design thinking can deliver an ROI of 85% or greater demonstrating a distinct connection between design and improved business outcomes. When design is absent from the product development process, it results in poorer experiences for people. And expandingdesign capacity leads to an increase in customer satisfaction and product adoption.

Design skills are key

Companies recognize this value as an essential lever to achieve business objectives, as well as the opportunities it provides to create ethical, equitable, and sustainable solutions that benefit both businesses and communities.

Design skills are also necessary across most Salesforce roles. There's a growing need for individuals who work on the Salesforce Platform to apply design skills to make human-centric decisions and deliver leading customer experiences.

Data from a Burning Glass Technologies report showed that, in 2019, Salesforce job postings that required at least one design skill included:

  • 15% of job postings for Salesforce Administrators
  • 27% of job postings for Salesforce Consultants
  • 37% of job postings for Salesforce Architects
  • 41% of job postings for Salesforce Developers

Leading businesses apply human-centered design (HCD) in Salesforce and across their business operations. According to IBM's The State of Salesforce 2020-21, companies use HCD to meet users' needs, simplify problems, cut down complexity, and align goals and vision across teams.

"We know design is good for business. Better design leads to better usability and product experiences, which lead to improved adoption, higher customer satisfaction, and better business for the whole Salesforce ecosystem." - Cynthia Kaschub, PhD, Salesforce Research Architect

Hear from Salesforce Designer Asterisk Loftis

Asterisk Loftis, Director of Design Services at Togetherwork, shares why he's thrilled about the Salesforce Designer role and UX Designer certification.

"Design is not just about making things look pretty, it's a skill you can cultivate and improve. This certification will give you the foundational knowledge to confidently build design solutions on the Salesforce Platform." - Asterisk Loftis, Director of Design Services, Togetherwork

Q: Why do you think it's key for Salesforce to invest in helping designers skill up?

A: No matter your role, having a heightened design mindset will help you better solve complicated problems your users face.

For example, technical architects and product owners are interfacing with the end-user as much as designers are, so understanding design processes will help them better address their customers' problems. This means that better ideas will be generated, and outputs will look and behave better, ultimately improving the ecosystem and communities at large.

There's always more to learn, and now I can point my team to Salesforce-specific resources - Trailhead modules for designers, trails, the UX Designer certification - to drive continued education so they can grow their designer mindset, skill up, and push themselves further in their careers.

Q: Tell us why design is essential for you.

A: Design is inherent to everything on this earth. We're all designers in our own way and can communicate design with thought, intent, and purpose that ultimately changes people's lives and solves their most important problems.

Q: What's your best advice for Trailblazers who want to earn the UX Designer certification?

A: It's important to understand that design is not just about making things look pretty, it's a skill you can cultivate and improve. This certification will give you the foundational knowledge to confidently build design solutions on the Salesforce Platform.
