Hamm. The Minister of Economic Affairs, Industry, Climate Protection and Energy and Deputy Prime Minister of North Rhine-Westphalia, Mona Neubaur, visited Mannesmann Line Pipe GmbH in Hamm today, Friday, 05.08.2022. The politician informed herself about the production of steel pipes for a connection line of the LNG terminal in Wilhelmshaven.

Mannesmann Line Pipe GmbH - a subsidiary of Salzgitter AG - has received an order from Buhlmann for the supply of around 800 t of steel pipes. The end customer is the company Uniper. Representatives of the companies were also present at the meeting. The pipes are intended for a 3.3-kilometre-long high-pressure gas pipeline to connect the Wilhelmshaven LNG terminal. The starting material for this is supplied by the Group's sister company Salzgitter Flachstahl GmbH.

From the new LNG terminal in Wilhelmshaven, a pipeline leads to the vicinity of the Etzel gas storage facility, where it will be integrated into the existing German gas pipeline network. From there, the initially up to 7.5 billion cubic meters of gas can be transported annually from the North Sea coast to the south and east of the country. The Salzgitter AG subsidiary Mannesmann Grossrohr GmbH has already supplied the steel pipes for this line.

Andreas Betzler, Commercial Director, explains: 'We are pleased about the great interest in our company and are proud to make a contribution to securing Germany's energy supply with our steel pipes. We were able to provide production capacities quickly and react flexibly. The energy transition needs innovative steel products and a solid domestic material base as a basis. The Salzgitter Group offers this with integrated steel production and companies for further processing. This makes us predestined for the upcoming expansion of the distribution networks for natural gas and the upcoming hydrogen infrastructure.'

Minister Mona Neubaur says: 'Today it is once again clear that the technical know-how from North Rhine-Westphalia is more in demand than ever and indispensable for the major challenges of the energy and climate transition. With steel pipes Made in NRW, the Mannesmann Line Pipe plant not only makes an important contribution to the rapid construction of the LNG terminal in Wilhelmshaven, but also to the security of gas supply throughout Germany.'

Holger Kreetz, COO Asset Management, Uniper, comments: 'Our planned LNG terminal in Wilhelmshaven plays an essential role in Germany's security of supply - the time pressure is correspondingly high. This is precisely why it is important to have reliable partners such as Mannesmann Line Pipe GmbH who support us with the necessary pragmatism and expertise. The construction work is progressing rapidly, also thanks to the good cooperation with politicians. We are looking forward to commissioning in winter 2022/2023.'

In the future, in addition to natural gas, grid expansion for other media such as hydrogen and CO will also be2 be required. Mannesmann Line Pipe has already developed suitable products for this purpose, such as H2ready pipes for transporting hydrogen, and has already supplied numerous projects. Due to climate change, water and drinking water will also have to be transported over longer distances through pipelines.
