Salzgitter : welcomes the adoption of Germany’s National Hydrogen Strategy

Salzgitter AG expressly welcomes the National Hydrogen Strategy adopted by the federal cabinet on June 10th, along with the formation of a National Hydrogen Council. Both are important milestones in the targeted continuing progress of the energy transition.
By way of a process of direct reduction harnessing hydrogen based on the SALCOS (SAlzgitter Low CO₂ Steelmaking) approach, the steel industry is in a position to make a contribution to the decarbonization of our society that is by industry-wide and sector-specific standards both economically and ecologically outstanding.
Direct reduction drawing on hydrogen is the most energy-efficient and most rapidly implementable concept aimed at decarbonizing the production of steel and offers the prospect of an up to 95 % reduction in CO₂.
With the advent of the National Hydrogen Strategy, the way is clear to address the removal of significant obstacles that impede prompt realization of projects such as SALCOS. These include the production and provision of the volumes of hydrogen that will be required in future, as well as putting the political-economic conditions in place that will be needed to facilitate competitive low-CO₂ steel production.
We are delighted that a representative of the steel industry has been appointed to the National Hydrogen Council in the person of Professor Dr. Fuhrmann, Chairman of the Executive Board of Salzgitter AG.
