Salzgitter AG, WEVG, Avacon AG and the city of Salzgitter want to make Salzgitter a pioneer of the municipal heating transition.

'We want to lead the heat supply of the city of Salzgitter into a climate-neutral future!' Salzgitter's Lord Mayor and Chairman of the Supervisory Board of WEVG, Frank Klingebiel, Marten Bunnemann, CEO of Avacon AG and Gunnar Groebler, CEO of Salzgitter AG , have big plans: together with the local energy supplier WEVG want to transform Salzgitter's heat supply and lead the city into a climate-neutral future.

The energy supplier WEVG wants to begin its mission in Salzgitter-Lebenstedt, the district with the largest population. There is already a well-sized district heating route here that connects the integrated steelworks of Salzgitter AG and the district. The district heating comes from the Salzgitter Flachstahl GmbH power plant. The waste gases produced during steel production (blast furnace, steelworks and coke oven gas) are essentially utilized there. This energy, which is already very climate-friendly, will increasingly be replaced by industrial waste heat from the new production facilities in the course of the transformation of Salzgitter AG's iron and steel works, which has already begun. As part of the SALCOS - Salzgitter Low CO 2 Steelmaking programThe group is converting the Salzgitter steel site into green steel production by 2033. This also ensures the supply of climate-neutral district heating and enables further expansion.

'The changeover will quickly have a major impact in Salzgitter-Lebenstedt,' Frank Klingebiel, Lord Mayor and Chairman of the Supervisory Board, is convinced. 'With our WEVG, we are planning to significantly expand the district heating network in Salzgitter-Lebenstedt from next year and to connect many other buildings that have previously been heated with natural gas and other non-CO 2 -neutral fuels to the climate-friendly district heating system. 'Salzgitter will thus take on a pioneering role in Germany in the use of industrial waste heat,' says Klingebiel.

AlsoGunnar Groebler sees the switch to district heating in the north of Salzgitter as forward-looking: 'The city of Salzgitter has a clear location advantage due to the nearby availability of 'green' district heating from the Salzgitter Group - we want to use this. With our SALCOS program , we can not only produce our steel in an almost climate-neutral manner, but also help to accompany Salzgitter into a CO 2 -neutral heating future. In this way, global challenges are solved in an exemplary manner at a local level.'

Marten Bunnemannemphasizes the supra-regional significance of the joint project: 'With this project, Salzgitter will become a pioneer of the municipal heating transition. We make optimal use of the potential of industrial waste heat in terms of energy efficiency and lead the city of Salzgitter's heat supply into a climate-neutral future. It shows that the energy transition will succeed when industry, politics and business pull together.' '

Thanks to the shared commitment to the use of climate-neutral district heating, we can now take further steps within the framework of our project,' says Johannes Eickmann, technical managing director the WEVG .

Rainer Krause, commercial director of WEVG, adds: 'Not least because of the changed political framework conditions, we are receiving more and more inquiries from potential heating customers. With district heating from the Salzgitter Group, we will be able to offer them a good future-proof and sustainable alternative.'
