The U.K.'s Competition and Markets Authority said Thursday that it is opening an investigation into the planned sale of SAP SE's cloud-communications unit SAP Digital Interconnect to Sweden's Sinch AB.

The regulator said that it wants to verify whether the deal could lead to "a substantial lessening of competition within any market or markets in the United Kingdom for goods or services."

The CMA has until Oct. 28 to reach its Phase 1 decision.

Earlier this year, the companies reached a 225 million-euro ($266.8 million) agreement over the sale of the unit.
