POLYOLEFIN FOAMS PROVIDE ATTRACTIVE SOLUTIONS FOR THERMAL INSULATION IN BUILDINGS

Foam plays a key role in the reduction in energy consumption of buildings. With its flexibility and good thermal insulation properties, polyolefin foams are widely used in many building and construction applications such as floor underlay, sealing, ground cushioning and especially pipe insulation.

SABIC® LDPE HP0824NDF offers special benefits using various foam production processes such as physical foam extrusion, the chemical cross-linking process, as well as the bun process, resulting in lightweight foams. It offers material and energy savings, while retaining or even improving product performance; and it offers benefits in thermal and acoustic insulation, cushioning and protection.

The advantages of SABIC® LDPE HP0824NDF are high viscosity, giving good head pressure for uniform and thicker foam thickness, and relatively higher resin density for better mechanical strength. This grade is less sensitive to web-breaks and foam-collapse due to high consistency and a wider operating window compared to existing materials in the market, resulting in a higher material yield during processing. The foams produced give a higher compression strength, better resilience, uniform surface and cell structure, and fewer pinholes, as well as better dimensional stability compared to existing materials. This offers opportunities for material savings during production.

In the area of pipe insulation, SABIC is expanding its solutions through new development programs at SABIC's recently opened Foam Innovation Center in the Netherlands, involving blends of LDPE with SABIC®FORTIFY™ thermoplastic polyolefin elastomer (POE) or SABIC®COHERE™ thermoplastic polyolefin plastomer (POP), making it possible to generate new applications to replace NBR and EPDM for cold insulation. These new blends provides much better flexibility and tear resistance compared to conventional LDPE foam, properties which are essential for easier and quicker installation of pipe insulation, and are highly cost competitive.

SABIC has more than 35 years of experience in foams, with foam grades produced in Europe and in Saudi Arabia. SABIC has put in place dedicated global business, marketing and sales teams, together with technical and compliance experts, to offer insights on customized applications and solutions with the most added value. This new set-up will enable a more focused and faster implementation of solutions to meet the needs of customers and partners around the world, including in Asia.

VAST PIPE PORTFOLIO FOR USE IN INFRASTRUCTURE, DOMESTIC, INDUSTRIAL AND AGRI- & AQUACULTURE

With rapid urbanization, China is one of the world's largest consumer of plastic pipes. Not only does SABIC offer a vast portfolio of advanced materials for pipe network owners and pipe converters looking for material solutions that will increase the performance and lifetime of pipes, it is also an integrated provider with solutions.

  • Infrastructure: A latest development by SABIC, SABIC® P6006AD, is a black high-density polyethylene compound produced from an advanced cascade process using multi-modal technology. Classified as a MRS 11.2 material (PE112), it provides superior long-term hydrostatic strength balanced with high slow crack growth resistance and rapid crack propagation resistance, providing enhanced safety in long-term use.

SABIC® HDPE P6006LS black compounded, which is CEN/TS 12201-7 and CEN/TS 1555-7, as well as ISO 4427 and ISO 4437 certified, is characterized by a good low-sagging behavior which makes the material typically used for large diameter pipes where reliable wall thickness control is paramount.

PE gas piping solutions have demonstrated, through SABIC's internal lifecycle analysis, to have a lower carbon footprint and extended service life when compared to metal pipes.

  • Domestic: Polypropylene random copolymer (PP-R) hot and cold water pipes offer easy installation by welding, are both taste & odor neutral, and offer good temperature and pressure resistance. First to offer PP-R in the market for this application, SABIC has recently expanded its portfolio with new custom colors, as well as a glass-filled PP-R compound SABIC® G1620B. This compound is used in multi-layer PP-R pipe application, and can reduce thermal expansion of the pipe caused by fluctuating water temperature by factor 6 or more. PP-R systems are a sustainable alternative to traditional copper pipes since they are corrosion-resistant, and the ease of installation means less energy is consumed in the process.

Another latest offering, used for cold water pipes, is SABIC® PP 81E60T, a new PP impact copolymer grade produced in one of SABIC's production plants in China. Its easy processing characteristic is a valued attribute by pipe manufacturers.

  • Industrial: Polyolefin pipes can typically be used in chemical plants, mines and process industries due to their ability to resist corrosion and abrasion, and can safety transport aggressive and dangerous fluids and waste in an economical way.

Steel pipes, used in oil and gas exploration and transport, require protection against corrosion to extend the lifetime of the pipe infrastructure. SABIC® VESTOLEN A 5640C compound is used as a topcoat on three-layer corrosion-protection systems for steel pipes, delivering optimum protection against corrosion, excellent stress-cracking resistance, resistance to hazardous chemicals, and reduced maintenance costs. The compound prevents premature pipe failure and promotes durability.

  • Agri- & Aquaculture: High-efficiency irrigation systems help to increase agricultural yields while using less water. Larger diameter pressure pipes can transport irrigation water over longer distances, or may pump water from the ground. Small diameter pipes and tapes dose the water in the rights amounts to the plants. SABIC offers a range of tailormade solutions for durable micro irrigation systems, including developing custom material such as SABIC® LLDPE 128CNJ which, through its good combination of toughness, stiffness and Environment Stress Crack Resistance (ESCR), brings a new level of performance to pipe producers and the agricultural market.
