Safety at SABIC is one of the company's core values, said Vice Chairman and CEO Yousef A. Al-Benyan on the occasion of a significant milestone of 200 million safe work hours without lost-time injury for construction of its mega-engineering projects. This clearly demonstrates SABIC's philosophy of making health and safety of its employees central to its operations.
Speaking at a ceremony, in the presence of Prince Saud bin Abdullah bin Thenayan Al-Saud, Chairman of SABIC and President of the Royal Commission for Jubail and Yanbu, in Jubail on October 10 to mark the safety record, Mr. Al-Benyan highlighted the company's commitment to ensuring a safe and healthy environment for its employees and the communities it serves.
'The safety of our people, our environment, and the communities where we live and work is not merely a priority for us at SABIC,' he said. 'Rather, safety is for us a core value - a deeply held belief that is a fundamental force driving your actions and behaviors.'
Some 20 projects executed at more than 15 different manufacturing affiliates and sites contributed to this achievement. They include the affiliates Al-Jubail Petrochemical Company (Kemya), Arabian Industrial Fiber Company (Ibn Rushd), Saudi Arabian Fertilizer Company (SAFCO), Arabian Petrochemical Company (Petrokemya), Saudi Methyl Acrylate Company (SAMAC), and National Methanol Company (Ibn Sina), besides SABIC's Riyadh and Jubail housing projects.
Al-Benyan said that SABIC delivers on that core value year after year without negative impacts by maintaining a strong culture of environment, health, safety and security - going beyond simple compliance.

'A compliance culture alone can lead to complacency,' he said. 'Rather, we seek to create a culture in which our employees are proactively meeting safety requirements in their daily actions and decisions.'

SABIC's latest safety milestone is evidence of the company progressing well in achieving safe and sustainable plant operations, Al-Benyan said, while stressing the need to maintain the momentum by accepting personal responsibilities and integrating the principles of Environment, Health, Safety, and Security into all business activities.

In an earlier speech at the function, Abdulrahman Al-Basri, SABIC Vice President, Engineering and Project Management, pointed out that more than 20 Engineering Procurement and Construction contractors and more than 100 subcontractors contributed to the safety achievement.

'In spite of various project challenges and business priorities, Environment, Health, Safety, and Security is always the first priority for SABIC where line management appreciates individuals who keeps EHSS a priority over schedule progress and cost. It is a leadership commitment and people-entrenched culture,' he said.

The ceremony was largely attended by representatives of SABIC's collaborating companies, contractors, subcontractors, affiliate teams, and well-wishers.
