A street in the Samara residential neighborhood of Volgar has been renamed in honor of Professor Sophia Agranovich of Samara State University at the initiative of Sber and with the support of Amond Group. The Samara City Administration supported Sber's In the Name of Women project, dedicated to renaming streets after prominent Russian women. Samara is the second city in Russia to rename a street in the framework of the project.

Sophia Agranovich was a Russian philologist and literary and folklore scholar. A professor of Russian and foreign literature at Samara State University, she held a PhD in philology and was the author of several books. She was born on June 24, 1994, in Kuibyshev (now Samara). She graduated from Kuibyshev Pedagogical Institute and, at the invitation of Lev Fink, went to work at Kuibyshev State University, where she spent 30 years and became the city's leading expert on folklore, mythology, and mythopoeia.

Agranovich designed a course on History and Theory of Folklore and taught a special seminar for students examining the link between folklore and literature and the way ancient mythology is reflected in the modern artistic consciousness. Her own research followed the same path: she and her colleagues penned seven research monographs.

There are currently few streets named after great women. Even in Moscow, less than 1.5% of streets bear female names. In the Name of Women was designed to draw the public's attention to the importance of gender equality and emphasize the role women play in various areas.

The street was inaugurated on June 24, on Sophia Agranovich's birthday. First Deputy Head of the Samara City District Maksim Kharitonov, Sberbank Samara branch manager Sergei Tyutin, Samara University Rector Vladimir Bogatyrev, and Among Group President Julia Khadzhieva participated in the event.

Through In the Name of Women, which aims to enlighten people about Russian women who have contributed significantly to science, art, education, sport, and other areas of life, Sber is raising awareness about the importance of gender equality. Women have changed and continue to change the world and make a huge difference in all areas of our life. Today, Samara became the second Russian city to name a street after one of our female compatriots - Sophia Agranovich - in the framework of the project. We hope that we succeed in safeguarding the heritage that she left us and the memory of her as a person.

Manager of Sberbank's Samara branch

We support Sber's initiative to name new streets in our country after prominent women. In the framework of In the Name of Women, a street in the new microneighborhood of Volgar in Samara was chosen - it has now been renamed after the outstanding Sophia Agranovich. This pays tribute to her professional qualities, research achievements, and literary prowess. We are glad that our city's residents and guests will now be able to properly appreciate her life journey, achievements, and the contributions she made to the development of our city.

Vladislav Zotov

Deputy Head of the Samara City District, Head of the Department of Economic Development, Investments and Trade of the Samara City Administration

Amond Group expresses its gratitude to Sber for the trust and opportunity to participate in a new and interesting project called In the Name of Women. We also thank the City Administration for being imbued with this idea and for supporting it. When looking into the issue of renaming the street, it turned out that many people with whom I work and have a lot of respect for were her students. We are really glad that even more people will know the name of Sophia Agranovich now.

Julia Khadzhieva

President, Amond Group

This is a major event for Samara University. Until now, only one street in Samara had been named after a scientist, Kuibyshev Aviation Institute Dean Viktor Lukachev. Every year, Samara University students organize and hold a celebration of Lukachev Street, which attracts more and more people. Now we will have another iconic location in the city, and the name of Sophia Agranovich, for whom all her graduates and co-workers feel such awe and tenderness, will remain in people's memory. I may be wrong, but this might be the first time that this country names a street after a Russian folklorist.

Vladimir Bogatyrev

Rector, Samara University
