The international Global Impact Conference has held a panel discussion called Artificial Intelligence for the Sake of Humanity, which was attended by Alexander Vedyakhin, First Deputy Chairman of the Executive Board, Sberbank. He spoke of how AI helps implement social projects and how Sber's AI solutions contribute to building a sustainable and prosperous society.

Artificial intelligence has long ceased being simply a commercial tool used to streamline business processes. Now it helps in resolving social, environmental, and other problems of mankind, Alexander Vedyakhin said in his presentation. Sber has a separate horizontal for such projects, it's called AI for Good. It includes:

· classification of forest fires using satellite data

· chest CT imaging to diagnose COVID-19

· diagnosis of strokes

· diagnosis of breast cancer using mammograms

· Holter ECG monitoring to diagnose health problems.

Alexander Vedyakhin also mentioned that Sber had launched a series of international hackathons as part of the international AI Journey conference scheduled for December 3‒5. Hackathons will see AI decipher Peter I manuscripts, forecast river floods, understand, and generate complex texts.

Other Russian companies promote humanitarian AI projects too, Mr. Vedyakhin said. For example, Beeline and the search and rescue team Lisa Alert have launched an AI service to search for missing people by satellite photos.

Artificial intelligence opens up new opportunities for humanity. It allows us to resolve key social problems in line with the UN Sustainable Development Goals, equalizes people's access to health care and education, and helps to protect the environment. The experience of dealing with the coronavirus pandemic this year has demonstrated very clearly the unique capabilities of AI and the colossal demand for its use for the sake of public welfare.
