Monica Bellgran has been named the first Leif Östling Professor of Industrial Production Management. The professorship is associated with Södertälje Science Park, which is being established by the Royal Institute of Technology together with Scania and AstraZeneca.

She will start her assignment at the new campus this autumn and help establish research on sustainable production and production management. That will include research and educational activities.

'We face, or rather we are in the midst of, a number of social challenges that we need help address,' she says. 'Energy, environment and climate are critical areas and from the production perspective, we can further develop resource-efficient methods. Digitalisation affects our societies and we need to take the next step in combining sustainability with digitalisation.'

Scania has been instrumental in establishing the new campus. Considering the role of Leif Östling, Scania's CEO and President 1994-2012, in developing production management, the professorship has been named after him. He also serves as Chairman of Södertälje Science Park.
