Karl Brunner Distinguished Lecture with Carmen Reinhart on 23 September 2021 to take place online

The fifth Karl Brunner Distinguished Lecture, with Carmen Reinhart as this year's speaker, is to be held on 23 September 2021, beginning at 5.30 pm. The event will take place virtually and will be streamed live on the SNB website.1

Carmen Reinhart's lecture is entitled 'Central Banks and Public Debts'. After the lecture, a Q&A session will take place in which the audience will be able to pose questions to Ms Reinhart via chat function. The event is to be held in English.

Carmen Reinhart is Vice President and Chief Economist of the World Bank Group, as well as Professor at Harvard Kennedy School. Prior to this, she was a Senior Policy Advisor and Deputy Director at the International Monetary Fund. Her academic work has contributed considerably to a better understanding in a broad range of macroeconomic fields, including financial crises, exchange rate and commodity price volatility, investment and saving, capital mobility, and sovereign debt. Carmen Reinhart is the co-author (with Kenneth S. Rogoff) of the acclaimed book This Time is Different: Eight Centuries of Financial Folly, which has been translated into over 20 languages and won the Paul A. Samuelson Award.

The Karl Brunner Distinguished Lecture Series was established by the SNB in 2016 to mark the centenary of the birth of the Swiss economist Karl Brunner (1916-1989). Speakers invited are academics whose research has proven to be particularly relevant to central bank monetary policy practice.
