Three of China's major airlines including Air China, China Eastern Airlines and China Southern Airlines have announced that they will offer in-flight Wi-Fi services.

In a statement on June 2, China Eastern Airlines (CEA) said that it had received approval from the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology to offer in-flight Wi-Fi services onboard 21 aircraft covering both domestic and international flights.

Through the use of advanced 'Ku-band satellite Wi-Fi solution' technology, CEA said its Wi-Fi services would allow wider coverage and faster Internet speed than the current air-to-ground solution used by the majority of airlines worldwide.

They also said that they had received government approval and were in the process of fitting out 10 Airbus A300's with the Wi-Fi service.

According to a CEA spokesperson, the airline expects to complete the installation of Ku-band satellite Wi-Fi systems by June, 2016.

Air China, on the other hand, has been releasing details of its Wi-Fi-endabled flights on a weekly basis. Eighteen flights from the airline currently offer in-flight Wi-Fi connection, covering domestic cities such as Beijing, Shanghai, Shenzhen and Guangzhou, and international cities such as Geneva, Seoul, Paris and Milan.

Wi-Fi services on all three airlines are currently free of charge, although China Eastern Airlines have announced that they will implement a pricing scheme at a later date.
