RICHMOND, British Columbia (AP) _ Sierra Wireless Inc. (SWIR) on Wednesday reported a loss of $12.7 million in its first quarter.

On a per-share basis, the Richmond, British Columbia-based company said it had a loss of 33 cents. Earnings, adjusted for one-time gains and costs, were 23 cents per share.

The results surpassed Wall Street expectations. The average estimate of four analysts surveyed by Zacks Investment Research was for earnings of 3 cents per share.

The wireless broadband modem maker posted revenue of $173 million in the period, also exceeding Street forecasts. Three analysts surveyed by Zacks expected $141.3 million.
