DENVER (AP) _ SM Energy Co. (SM) on Thursday reported a loss of $223 million in its second quarter.

The Denver-based company said it had a loss of $1.88 per share. Earnings, adjusted for non-recurring costs and asset impairment costs, were 1 cent per share.

The results exceeded Wall Street expectations. The average estimate of six analysts surveyed by Zacks Investment Research was for a loss of 20 cents per share.

The independent oil and gas company posted revenue of $563.8 million in the period, also exceeding Street forecasts. Four analysts surveyed by Zacks expected $401.1 million.

SM Energy shares have more than tripled since the beginning of the year. In the final minutes of trading on Thursday, shares hit $18.52, rising fivefold in the last 12 months.
