SMRT INTRODUCES WAB SERVICES ON FIVE NEW BUS ROUTES TO SERVE PASSENGERS-IN-WHEELCHAIRS

1. In conjunction with International Day of Persons with Disabilities on 3 December
2011, SMRT Buses will introduce trunk and feeder Wheelchair Accessible Bus (WAB) services on five new bus routes to serve the needs of passengers-in- wheelchairs. These services are 61, 855, 920, 922 and 950, bringing the total number of SMRT Buses' WAB services to 13.

2. SMRT bus services 61, 855, 920, 922, and 950 aim to connect passengers-in- wheelchairs to MRT and LRT stations such as Botanic Gardens, Bukit Batok, Bukit Panjang, Bugis, City Hall, Eunos, Harbourfront, Lavender, Outram Park, Telok Blangah and Yishun. Services 61 and 855 will also call at medical facilities such as Bukit Batok Clinic, Alexandra Hospital, Raffles Hospital, Singapore General Hospital, Bukit Merah Polyclinic, Mount Alvernia Hospital, Queenstown Polyclinic and Yishun Polyclinic.

3. SMRT Buses Vice President, Ms Kang Huey Ling said: "SMRT Buses continues to bring convenience to passengers-in-wheelchairs by introducing more wheelchair enabled buses in our fleet and additional WAB services, in support of the government's plan to have all public buses wheelchair accessible by 2020. In addition, the safety of our passengers remain our top priority. Our Service Leaders have been trained to operate the ramps on our WAB buses correctly
and to provide assistance to passengers-in-wheelchairs when needed."

Two large decals are also placed at the front doors of WAB services advising able-bodied passengers to be patient while our Service Leader serves the passenger-in-wheelchair on WAB services first. Each WAB service can accommodate 1-2 passengers-in-wheelchair. Currently, 184 buses in SMRT's fleet are WAB, which is about 18% of the entire bus fleet. SMRT Buses plan to launch more WAB services next year and will add another 50 MAN A22 buses to its fleet by the end of 2011.
