28 December 2011
Update on North-South and East-West Lines
1. Based on SMRT's preliminary findings, the train stoppages
on 15 and 17 December were caused by the disruption of power
to the trains when an unprecedented number of sequential
power rail claws were dislodged at the Floating Slab Tracks
(FST) along the North-South Line.
2. As of today, SMRT has completed securing the claws along
all underground FST and Concrete Slab Tracks (CST) on both
the North-South and East-West Lines. The tried and tested
solution of using cable ties to secure the claws is in line
with the recommendation by the original manufacturer.
3. SMRT has brought in international experts to check the
system. In the meantime, SMRT will continue to maintain a
reduced speed of 40 kph for its trains along the FST between
Bishan and Marina Bay Stations on the North-South Line, and
between Bugis and Tiong Bahru Stations on the East-West Line.
This adds two minutes to normal end-to-end travel time of
about 60 minutes. The extra two minutes is similar to the
longer travel time on rainy days when trains travel at slower
speeds at aboveground stations.
4. SMRT thanks commuters for their patience and support. We
are particularly grateful to members of the public who have
written to encourage and support our staff, as well as sent
flowers and other tokens of appreciation during this period.
