Snaminnova is born: Snam's Open Innovation programme

for the energy transition

  • The call for Innovative Learning start-ups for continuous training launches today
  • The programme, launched with the support of Cariplo Factory, also aims to involve company employees in the development of innovative projects

Milan, 13th May 2021 - Snam today launches the Snaminnova Open Innovation programme, which will be developed over several years with the aim of strengthening the company's innovative capacity for energy transition, digital transformation and the growth of the innovation ecosystem to the benefit of the country.

The initiative, launched with the support of Cariplo Factory, the hub that has been designing and implementing transformative pathways dedicated to businesses since 2016, has three main focuses: the development of projects with start-ups selected during various calls on different topics, the selection of innovative ideas from Snam employees accompanied in their growth through a structured pathway (the Centrale delle idee or Ideas Hub), and finally the dissemination of a culture of innovation within the company, through the creation of a community of Innovation Ambassadors.

'Snaminnova was born from a desire to make innovation a pillar of the strategic development of our business. New digital technologies, in which we will invest €500 million by 2024, combined with the skills of our people and the synergy with the start-up ecosystem, will enable us to make Snam an increasingly important player in the energy transition. This programme has two fundamental objectives: the development of innovative solutions that can be directly implemented in our businesses and the promotion of a culture of innovation in every segment of our activities', says Claudio Farina, Executive Vice President Digital Transformation & Technology at Snam.

'We're very pleased to have been selected by a company of Snam's calibre to conduct this important and particularly innovative project, which we believe will have an impact not only on the company, but on the entire ecosystem of the energy sector', says Enrico Noseda, Chief Innovation Advisor of Cariplo Factory. 'Cultural change and the search for new ideas and innovative start-ups are essential pillars to be competitive in a constantly changing scenario, where digital disruption has imposed a change of pace and a new mindset, based on continuous innovation, a strategic driver for any established company in the near future'.

Snaminnova kicks off today with the launch of Innovative Learning, the call for start-ups that aims to select the best ideas for increasing the quality of people's interaction within the company and identifying innovative tools for their continuous growth, in synergy with the training courses provided by the Snam Institute. The call is divided into three different areas of interest:

  • Personalised Content: digital solutions aimed at improving and personalising learning processes
  • Learning: digital solutions aimed at optimising and innovating traditional corporate learning and training processes, through digital platforms exploiting innovative technologies such as VR and AR, AI, chatbots, voice and image recognition
  • Engage & Reward: digital solutions to increase employee engagement with the ongoing need for training, exploring innovative solutions such as gamified learning through apps and community creation.

The start-ups most in line with the call requirements will have the opportunity to participate in a Selection Day next September, and enter a Business Case programme to develop their innovative solutions through a pilot project with Snam's Open Innovation division. Companies interested in participating in the Call4Startup Innovative Learning can submit their applications by 18th June on the snaminnova.snam.it website. The start-ups selected to enter the next phase of the trial will be identified by the summer.

Internally, the Open Innovation programme also includes the identification of Innovation Ambassadors, contact figures for company employees who will promote innovation and will be included in the work team of internal innovation pathways for the cultivation and development of ideas. The Innovation Ambassadors will also have the opportunity to participate in training through a series of workshops on innovation theories, trends and methodologies. Moreover, they will be able to participate in ecosystem initiatives promoted within the Cariplo Factory network.

As part of the project, the 'Ideas Hub' will also be launched, an initiative for Snam employees that aims to identify and develop new, innovative solutions in different topic areas. The initial collection of ideas, which starts today, will focus on the theme of carbon neutrality and will be divided into five areas of interest: people's lifestyles, the use of renewable and decarbonised energy sources, green mobility, energy efficiency in buildings and waste management and reuse.
