KENOSHA, Wis. (AP) _ Snap-On Inc. (SNA) on Thursday reported third-quarter profit of $179.7 million.

The Kenosha, Wisconsin-based company said it had profit of $3.28 per share.

The results topped Wall Street expectations. The average estimate of seven analysts surveyed by Zacks Investment Research was for earnings of $2.16 per share.

The tool and diagnostic equipment maker posted revenue of $941.6 million in the period, which also topped Street forecasts. Six analysts surveyed by Zacks expected $804.4 million.

Snap-On shares have fallen slightly more than 8% since the beginning of the year, while the Standard & Poor's 500 index has risen slightly more than 6%. The stock has fallen almost 3% in the last 12 months.
