Atkins airport projects win regional AAAE project of the year awards

TAMPA, Fla., USA: Atkins, a member of the SNC-Lavalin Group, is pleased to announce that two of its projects have received general aviation project of the year awards from the American Association of Airport Executives - Southeast Chapter (AAAE-SEC), including the Lakeland Linder International Airport (LAL) Runway 9-27 rehabilitation and the Naples Airport aircraft rescue and firefighting (ARFF) station.

Atkins was lead designer for the LAL Runway 9-27 strengthening and rehabilitation project, which won the AAAE-SEC General Aviation Project of the Year - Airfield Category. The 8,500-foot runway was completely rehabilitated within a tight 108-day timeline. The project required 94,000 tons of asphalt and 53,000 tons of lime rock, while the Airport's CAT I instrument landing system (ILS) was upgraded to a SA CAT II ILS.

Atkins was lead designer for the Naples Airport ARFF station replacement project, which won General Aviation Project of the Year - Architectural Category. The project replaced the Airport's previous ARFF station, which was built in 1989, with a state-of-the-art facility built to withstand a Category 5 hurricane, and includes an emergency operations center to improve emergency response access to the surrounding community.
