AUSTIN, Texas, USA: Atkins, a member of the SNC-Lavalin Group, celebrated the official opening of two regionally significant toll projects, the 290/130 Flyovers and the 183 South, during a virtual ribbon cutting ceremony hosted by the Central Texas Regional Mobility Authority (Mobility Authority) on March 31, 2021. Responsible for project development and oversight, the Company served as the Mobility Authority's General Engineering Consultant (GEC) for both projects.

'These projects represent the Mobility Authority's commitment to developing a comprehensive regional transportation system for central Texas that offers greater mobility and reliable travel times,' said Brad Dennard, Atkins Department of Transportation Business Unit Director. 'Austin is expected to become the 10th most populated city in the US this year. We are proud to support and provide the mobility solutions that enhance quality of life and economic vitality for the region as it continues to grow.'

The 290/130 Flyovers Project, completed ahead of schedule, involved constructing three new flyovers at the convergence of 290 Toll and State Highway 130. The flyovers provide drivers safe, direct connections between the two roads, reduce congestion at the frontage road intersection and increase connectivity for Williamson County and northeast Travis County, two of the fastest growing counties in the country. As the Mobility Authority's general contractor for the project, the Company led many aspects including contractor procurement, railroad permit negotiation, overseeing the design-bid-build contractor and developing incentive packages for early completion. Atkins facilitated the delivery of this project on budget and ahead of schedule.

The 183 South Project transformed one of Austin's most congested corridors into a modern expressway with three tolled and three non-tolled lanes in each direction, tripling capacity just in time for east Austin's 'office boom,' as reported in the Austin Business Journal, 2020. The Company worked with the Mobility Authority in facilitating planning and feasibility studies, working with the finance teams to secure multiple sources of funding, and conducting all stakeholder coordination and public outreach. The project is intended to spur economic development in a historically underserved area that will soon be home to new commercial and residential developments.
