SOL takes part in the European Battery Alliance 22/12/2021

SOL joins the European Battery Alliance, getting more involved in the transition process towards a more sustainable mobility.

Topics such as the environmentalimpact caused by Greenhouse Gasesand climate changeare increasingly discussed at the tables of the world's major leaders, with the aim of defining agreements and interventions for the near future.

Last July the EU Commissionhas assumed a decisive position by approving the new climatic package Fit for 55, aimed at reaching the objectives of the Green Deal within 2030 (specifically, the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions by 55% compared to 1990 levels, in order to achieve "carbon neutrality" within 2050).

The approval of this programme involves the commitment of the sectors most responsible forCO2 emissions, such as transport and mobility, in the research for alternative "green" solutions. In the achievement of the sector's decarbonisation (responsible for 25% of emissions today), electrification of vehicles is one of the main objectives, being a real challenge for Europe, due to the complex market of lithium batteries fully controlled by China, Korea and Japan.

Focused on this goal, the European Union launched the European Battery Alliance (EBA) in 2017, a plan to create its own value chain in the lithium batteries market (essential raw material for the realization of the electric vehicles' battery pack, as well as cobalt). The EBA 250 is made up of 700 industrial companies, institutes, research centers, universities and other relevant players, which aims to support technological research, improve the sustainability of the battery manufacturing industry and develop a highly qualified workforce, in line with the framework of EU regulations, in order to create an ethical and self-sufficient electric mobility' supply chain.

SOL, willing to seize market developments and opportunities, is one of the main advocates of the ecological transition, declaring its adherence to the ambitious European programme.

As a first active contribution, we are now in collaboration with an Italian company (among the first in Europe in the lithium batteries production) for the development of a project aimed at the recovery of lithium and other noble metals (such as cobalt). This is to integrate into the production process a responsible and circular management of the components of the batteries at the end of life.

Thanks to this activity and to the official entry into the EBA network, SOL can get in touch with the main players in the automotive sector, keeping abreast of technological and regulatory developments in such a rapidly expanding industry. In addition, this offersopportunities for collaboration in the development of major innovative projectsfocused to achieve more sustainable mobility.
