SONY GROUP CORPORATION Every year on April 22, Earth Day provides people around the world with the opportunity to think again about the importance of protecting the global environment, each in their own way. The first event took place in 1970, based on a proposal from Senator G. Nelson in the wake of the 1969 oil spill in California, U.S.
The following is a message from Kenichiro Yoshida, Chairman, President and CEO of Sony Group Corporation, to mark this year's Earth Day.

At Sony, we are engaged in diverse businesses centered around the axis of people, based on our Purpose to "fill the world with emotion, through the power of creativity and technology." Our ability to continue these activities is based on the existence of a society where people can live with peace of mind, and a healthy global environment.
Many precious lives are being lost each day in Ukraine and other parts of the world, while many are being forced to leave their homes and overcome unimaginable challenges to seek safety and refuge. In terms of our planetary environment, we face intensifying issues and threats to our environment on a global scale.
Yet looking at the Earth from space, we see our beautiful planet as one, with no boundaries. More now than ever, I feel we must remind ourselves of our shared existence on this single planet, from the perspective of "The Planet Earth and Space." And in doing so, recognize that we are all connected as inhabitants of the Earth, and must care for each other and our global environment.
At Sony, we are currently working on a space inspiration project called STAR SPHERE with the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) and the University of Tokyo, which aims to launch a nanosatellite into space by the end of 2022. This satellite will enable people to experience views from space while remaining on the Earth, providing a level of camerawork flexibility that allows users to freely capture shots of the Earth and stars as they envision. We hope that gazing at the Earth's richly diverse landscapes and stunning beauty from the vantage point of space will inspire new feelings and perspectives towards our global environment and social issues.
I was able to meet Kimiya Yui, an astronaut from JAXA, in connection with this project. He told me that when he looked at the Earth from outer space, he could sense how thin the atmosphere is, and how frail the Earth. Moreover, our planet is not the "Mother Earth" that protects us, as much as something that itself needs to be protected. His words left a lasting impression on me.
Viewed from space, we can see an Earth that is fragile, and in need of our protection. How can we, who live on this Earth together, fulfill our responsibilities and contribute to its protection? This is something I would like to explore further with you all, and connect to action.
