Energy company Southern Co. has helped launch a $1 billion venture-capital fund committed to investing in venture and growth companies with decarbonization technologies.

Southern is a founding member of venture capital platform Energy Impact Partners. Through EIP's Flagship Fund II, the company said it has invested in more than a dozen technology companies that advance decarbonization and climate solutions.

"We see this as vital for the future of our business, our ability to achieve our sustainability goals and delivering the energy solutions our customers require," Christopher Cummiskey, Southern's chief customer solutions officer, said in prepared remarks.

The energy company plans to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 50% by 2030 from 2007 levels and to cut emissions completely by 2050.
