Southern Co. electric subsidiary Georgia Power on Tuesday said a coalition of utility companies across the southeast is working to secure federal financial support for a hydrogen hub in the region.

The newly formed coalition, which aims to reduce carbon emissions across its generation fleet, said it will respond to a recent funding opportunity from the Department of Energy, which includes $8 billion for regional hydrogen hubs. The coalition includes Southern Co.

"We see incredible potential in the future use of hydrogen as part of our diverse energy mix," said Chris Womack, chief executive officer of Georgia Power.
