SPRING, Texas (AP) _ Southwestern Energy Co. (SWN) on Thursday reported a loss of $609 million in its second quarter.

On a per-share basis, the Spring, Texas-based company said it had a loss of 90 cents. Earnings, adjusted for one-time gains and costs, came to 19 cents per share.

The results did not meet Wall Street expectations. The average estimate of nine analysts surveyed by Zacks Investment Research was for earnings of 22 cents per share.

The independent oil and gas company posted revenue of $1.05 billion in the period.

In the final minutes of trading on Thursday, the company's shares hit $4.90. A year ago, they were trading at $2.62.
