Hambourg, 14 April 2022 -SPIE Deutschland & Zentraleuropa, the German subsidiary of SPIE, the independent European leader in multi-technical services in the areas of energy and communications, has - after a public tender - been awarded a contract by the distribution grid operator Stromnetz Hamburg GmbH to extensively renew and expand the Hamburg-Nord transformer station in the Friedrichsgabe area of Norderstedt. With this modernisation project, the transformer station is being prepared to provide a sustainable and future-proof power supply. The work will begin in spring 2022 and is expected to be completed in summer 2026.

SPIE takes on a wide range of tasks

In order to meet the high requirements for supply quality in the metropolis of Hamburg, the Hamburg-Nord transformer station, which is around 50 years old, needs to be modernised and expanded. SPIE Deutschland & Zentraleuropa will bring the transformer station up to date with the latest technology and make it future-proof to meet the demanding requirements of the energy transition. To this end, the existing 110 kV switch gear at the Hamburg-Nord site will be completely modernised. In this process, the multi-technical service provider is responsible for all of the primary and secondary technology, including the protection and control technology. In addition, a new building will be set up to house the secondary technical systems, all of the technical building equipment implemented by SPIE as well.

Modification during ongoing operation is a matter of trust

The extensive work on the 110 kV switch gear at the Hamburg-Nord transformer station during ongoing operation poses a particular challenge. "First of all, we are setting up several temporary 110 kV switch gear panels and 110 kV cable runs. These allow a number of switch gear panels to be isolated and disconnected from the existing facility. This way, we will ensure an uninterrupted supply of power to the region," explained Markus Diering, project manager in the High Voltage operational division of SPIE Deutschland & Zentraleuropa. "We are delighted that Stromnetz Hamburg is placing its trust in us to carry out this responsible project," Markus Diering continued.

Trusting partnership

With this project, SPIE Deutschland & Zentraleuropa and Stromnetz Hamburg are continuing their long partnership. As a product- and manufacturer-neutral service provider, SPIE provides single source services and operational excellence. Over the years, SPIE has proven to be a reliable partner in helping grid operators to meet the challenges of the energy transition and ensure security of supply. Their excellent partnership is demonstrated by several successful past projects. "We are delighted to provide these extensive services for our long-standing customer. We are very proud to have convinced our customer with our solution and our expertise," emphasised Hannes Simon, branch manager at High Voltage operational division's Schaltanlagenbau business unit. "Our highly skilled team will bring its extensive experience to this project and implement the measures within a tight schedule thanks to detailed planning and technical expertise," said Hannes Simon in conclusion.
