Splendid Medien : Film co-produces comedy film with Dutch YouTube stars

(Amsterdam/Cologne - 14 June 2017) Splendid Film GmbH, a subsidiary of Cologne-based Splendid Medien AG, is co-producing the high school comedy MISFIT with Dutch production company NewBe. The film will be coming to cinemas in the Netherlands and Belgium as from 27 September 2017. The leading role is played by Dutch YouTube star Djamila, who is known for her hit single 'Brickwall' and her YouTube channel MeisjeDjamila.

Djamila, who lives in America, is the most popular female YouTuber in the Netherlands - with over 680.000 subscribers. Apart from playing the leading role, her music will be used in the film as well. Other cast members include the Dutch influencers Donny Roelvink, Niek Roozen, Gio Latooy, Défano Holwijn, Jill Schirnhofer, Chris Tates, Eddy Zoëy, Bente Fokkens, Jolijn Henneman, Fenna Ramos, Sara Ras and the boyband '4U'. Selina Mour and Tina Neumann, who have a broad fan base on musical.ly in particular, will give cameo appearances as well. The film is directed by Erwin van den Eshof (Popoz, De Ludwigs).

Djamila: 'For me, this is my first film role, and it's a huge one as well. A very fun and exciting challenge, and I'm really looking forward to it. The cast is amazing, and we are really bringing a piece of America to the Netherlands with MISFIT. The squads, speed and the humour. It will be awesome!'

MISFIT tells the story of Julia (Djamila), who moves back to the Netherlands after having lived in the U.S. for years. In America, she was the most popular girl in high school, but in the Netherlands, she is a complete 'misfit', an outsider. Her life at school is turned into a hell by the three most popular girls. When the chance arises to return to America, she does not hesitate, and she seizes the opportunity - even though this means she has to live a complex double life at school. When she starts falling in love with a boy, everything gets even more complicated, and she faces the question 'does she really want to leave, or would she rather stay?'

The executive producers on behalf of Splendid are Andreas R. Klein and Dr Dirk Schweitzer. Andrew Ernster, Managing Director of Splendid Film B.V. and one of the producers of MISFIT: 'Our first Dutch production combines the most well-known YouTube stars and a beautiful story.
