SSE : responds to 2022 CCC Progress Report

The Climate Change Committee has today published its latest assessment of Scotland's progress in reducing emissions.

SSE Statement:

"Scotland has some of the most stretching climate targets in the world and the resources to become a global leader in climate action. The CCC report though clearly underlines the need for businesses, government and the regulator to urgently move from ambition to action, and SSE stands ready to play its part by investing £15bn in Scotland in the next decade.

"Projects such as Berwick Bank, the world's largest offshore wind opportunity; Coire Glas pumped hydro storage and Peterhead CCS will all be pivotal in unlocking Scotland's 2030 targets - and all can be delivered this decade with supportive action from the UK and Scottish Governments. The build-out of electricity networks to support 2030 offshore wind ambitions and ensure there is the grid capacity to unlock the numbers of electric vehicles and heat pumps needed will require a shift in mindset towards anticipatory investment from Ofgem, with greater consideration of devolved targets.

"Fundamentally, though, it is vital for Scotland's economy and climate ambitions that its status as a leading destination for low-carbon energy is protected at all costs. We therefore urge policymakers to very carefully consider the impact and implementation of market interventions such as the Electricity Generators Levy to guard against any unintended long-term consequences for the deployment of renewables in Scotland."
