BANNOCKBURN, Ill. (AP) _ Stericycle Inc. (SRCL) on Thursday reported a loss of $20.1 million in its first quarter.

The Bannockburn, Illinois-based company said it had a loss of 22 cents per share. Earnings, adjusted for non-recurring costs, came to 52 cents per share.

The results did not meet Wall Street expectations. The average estimate of four analysts surveyed by Zacks Investment Research was for earnings of 65 cents per share.

The medical waste management company posted revenue of $785 million in the period, also falling short of Street forecasts. Five analysts surveyed by Zacks expected $804.8 million.

Stericycle shares have declined 26% since the beginning of the year, while the Standard & Poor's 500 index has declined 12%. The stock has decreased slightly more than 9% in the last 12 months.
