We are taking steps on our transformation journey to meet the consumer demand for eco-friendly and circular solutions. During the autumn 2020, we have announced several investments to shape our business for higher growth and value and to support our innovation agenda.
A feasibility study for expanding pulp and board capacity at Skoghall Mill We have decided to commence a feasibility study about expanding the pulp and board production at our Skoghall Mill in Sweden. The investment would leverage the already strong mill into an integrated, highly cost-competitive and environmentally-friendly producer of packaging board and bleached softwood market pulp. The feasibility study is expected to be completed by the end of 2021 and the production would start earliest in Q4/2023. Read more here.
Renewable, recyclable and biodegradable solution for protective packaging
We will build a pilot facility for producing biofoam, a lightweight, fiber-based foam material for protective packaging and cushioning. Bio-based foams are renewable and recyclable and can be used in packaging, for example, to replace oil-based polymer foams which are widely used today. The pilot plant will be located at Stora Enso's Fors Mill in Sweden.
Developing sustainable barrier solutions
We announced an investment in dispersion barrier technology at our Forshaga site in Sweden. The investment of approximately EUR 10 million enables the development and production of paperboard with desired barrier properties in a more sustainable way: the barriers are easier to handle in a recycling process, have a lower carbon footprint and can be compostable in industrial facilities. Investment in cross laminated timber (CLT) production in Czech Republic
We have decided to invest approximately EUR 79 million in a new production line for cross laminated timber (CLT) at our Zdirec sawmill in the Czech Republic. The investment will further enhance our position as a global provider of high-quality engineered wooden elements and as a market leader in CLT. Production is scheduled to begin during the third quarter of 2022.
