To encourage more people to love and appreciate nature, SHKP has again joined with Green Power to develop Hong Kong's first free countryside and beach clean-up mobile app. Today, Under Secretary for the Environment Mr. Tse Chin-wan; Assistant Director (Conservation) of the Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department Mr. Simon Chan; SHKP Executive Director Mr. Christopher Kwok; and Vice Chairman of Green Power Dr. Man Chi-sum announced the launch of free mobile app Nature Rescue and called on the public to lead eco-friendly lives.

At the launch ceremony, Under Secretary for the Environment Mr. Tse Chin-wan said: 'Hong Kong takes pride in its rich natural resources as well as beautiful scenic areas, and we all long for a clean natural environment. Since 2015, the Government has been promoting and has received widespread support for the 'Take your litter home' campaign to encourage citizens to help reduce litter in the countryside and to help maintain Hong Kong's natural beauty. Now, we are indeed pleased that an environmental group and a commercial organization have joined in the promotion, calling for even more citizens to engage in countryside and beach clean-up activities throughout Hong Kong.'

SHKP Executive Director Mr. Christopher Kwok said SHKP respects and loves nature while placing great emphasis on environmental education. Since 2011, SHKP and Green Power have jointly organized the SHKP Love Nature Campaign. To date, the Campaign's various activities have been taken part in for 50,000 times. To further promote concern for the environment across the community, SHKP and Green Power have developed the free mobile app Nature Rescue - an information and social networking platform which connects the public and encourages them to enjoy and appreciate nature. Mr. Kwok invited members of the public to download the free mobile app Nature Rescue to help clean up the countryside and beaches with their friends and family while enjoying Hong Kong's natural treasures.

Vice Chairman of Green Power Dr. Man Chi-sum expressed his gratitude to SHKP for its commitment towards promoting environmental protection. He noted that refuse in the countryside and along the shorelines not only ruins the scenery but also increases the risk to wild animals if they feed on inedible garbage. In addition, refuse releases harmful elements due to decomposition or oxidation if exposed to the sun, air or seawater, which can seriously harm the environment and eco-system. Dr. Man added that the goal of nature protection cannot be achieved through environmental groups' efforts alone, and that the public's support and concern are the most crucial factors to success. Environmental education initiatives in schools organized by Green Power and SHKP have received positive results. With the launch of the free mobile app Nature Rescue, Dr. Man believes even more citizens will want to participate in the cleaning up of countryside areas and beaches.

Winnie Mak, an Mphil student in Environmental Science, Policy and Management, Year 2, Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, is passionate about nature protection and has long been concerned about refuse problems in the countryside. After using the trial version of this free mobile app, she said at the launch event that now she can make good use of the updated status of beaches in Hong Kong and participate in clean-up activities in different districts by herself or with friends and family. She said she also gets the chance to meet like-minded people and share experiences. Any member of the public who enjoys and loves nature and is interested in contributing to Hong Kong's nature protection efforts is welcome to download the app and become a part of the Nature Rescue team.

Green Power was founded in 1988 by a group of dedicated Hong Kong volunteers with a focus on local environmental affairs. It primarily promotes environmental education as it believes education is the ultimate means of transforming thinking and behaviour, especially members of the next generation. Green Power established Hong Kong's first Green School Network for kindergartens, primary and secondary schools in 2001 to provide free environmental education support to teachers and students.
